Marken (on a former island)
For many centuries, Marken was a fishing
community and saw a little change. The construction of a
causeway connecting it with the mainland ended its isolation.
The island however kept its original atmosphere, retaining
its green-and-white wooden houses built
on mounds and piles to be protected against flooding. This
is a tiny village of houses on grouped around
an
tiny harbor. People of Marken occasionally
wear traditional dress, as much to preserve the customs
as
for the tourists.
The Marker Museum is
situated in the longest inhabited part of the island, and
is seated in four
little houses which used to be the homes of fishermen.
The interior of one of these houses is still intact.
Marken's traditional dresses has an exhibition here.
